About this venue
The Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto Jovellanos occupies the building founded in 1794 as the Real Instituto de Náutica y Mineralogía, the academic centre promoted by Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos. It is a square-plan construction whose three storeys are arranged around a porticoed courtyard, and it has been declared a National Monument.
Today it houses the headquarters of the Fundación de Cultura and the Universidad Popular of Gijón City Council. Its spaces include an assembly hall, an exhibition hall, classrooms and workshops, as well as meeting rooms and an image centre.
