The Centro Niemeyer is a cultural complex in Avilés designed by the Brazilian Oscar Niemeyer, his only work in Spain. It is run by the Fundación Centro Niemeyer, created in 2007, and officially opened on 26 March 2011. Niemeyer himself conceived it as a plaza open to everyone, devoted to education, culture and peace.
It is made up of five spaces: a public plaza hosting cultural and leisure activities, an auditorium, an open dome of about 400 m² intended for exhibitions, a 20-metre tower that serves as a viewpoint over the estuary, and a multipurpose building. Its programme includes exhibitions, performing arts, cinema, music, workshops and activities around the spoken and written word.
