Description of the Exhibition
The exhibition presents the artist’s installation titled Cajas-ambiente, a fundamental piece in the artist’s trajectory that constitutes one of the first experiences in Asturias of the integration of the spectator in the work. This installation breaks the solemn character that surrounds the artistic object and questions the separation between art and life.
History of the Installation
The installation was first presented in 1973 in the Club Pueblo of Madrid’s hall, with two professional actors and a university ballet group participating in its development. In 1974, it represented Spain at the X Biennial of Alexandria, where it received the first prize. The following year, it occupied one of the rooms of the old Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art. In October 1975, the work was presented in Gijón at the Tantra gallery, a fundamental space for the introduction of avant-garde in Asturias.
Characteristics of the Installation
The installation is composed of a floor and various panels on wheels that the spectator can move, modifying the structure of the set. The theme reflected in the piece is the city and how it conditions the human being, both protagonist and prisoner of the space. The relationship with pop art is substantiated in the choice of iconographies inspired by mass media and the use of techniques derived from advertising and comics.
