The Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos occupies the palace-house in Gijón where the writer and Enlightenment thinker Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was born in 1744. The building, made up of two towers joined by a central block, has the chapel of Los Remedios attached, which houses the mausoleum of the Enlightenment figure. The museum opened its doors in 1971.
Its rooms combine spaces devoted to Jovellanos, including a small sitting room and his bedroom, with the municipal art collection, which brings together works by Asturian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries alongside pieces from the main European schools of the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum’s programme revolves around the study and dissemination of the figure of Jovellanos and of the municipality’s artistic heritage.
