The Casa de Cultura «Marta Portal» is the cultural centre of the Nava town council, opened on 23 April 2001. It is named after the Nava-born writer Marta Portal Nicolás, winner of the Premio Planeta in 1966, who donated her private library to the town: more than 3,000 volumes kept in a room of the public library.
The four-storey building brings together the Biblioteca Pública Municipal «José Fernández Guerra», the Escuela Municipal de Música and the council’s cultural and educational activity. The basement holds an exhibition hall with shows all year round; the ground floor, a 160-seat auditorium with a stage, fly tower and lighting and sound equipment where concerts, theatre and talks take place. The first floor houses the Fondo Marta Portal and the Comarca de la Sidra youth service, and the second, the classrooms and practice booths of the music school.
