The Museo del Pueblo de Asturias is a museum in Gijón devoted to preserving and sharing the memory of the Asturian people. It was born in 1968, from an idea by Luis Adaro, on the initiative of the City Council and the city’s Chamber of Commerce, taking Europe’s open-air ethnographic museums as its model; it has been run by the Fundación Municipal de Cultura since 1985.
It occupies a wooded site of more than three hectares in the La Güelga area, where traditional buildings relocated from elsewhere have been gathered, such as the Valdés house, originally from Candás (17th century), and the González de la Vega house from Serín (1757), home of the Museo de la Gaita since 1992. In 1994 the Asturias Pavilion from the 1992 Universal Exposition in Seville was added. Its holdings bring together ethnographic objects, photographs, documents and musical instruments, and in 1992 the museum created the Fototeca de Asturias.
