History

The market of Avilés is the second oldest in Asturias, after that of Grau/Grado, and has more than 500 years. As in the case of the Fontán in Oviedo/Uviéu, it was the Catholic Monarchs who granted this town the privilege of holding a free market every Monday of the year, since the Town of the Adelantado had suffered a devastating fire and needed to recover.

Location

This market had different locations, until the 19th century when the Hermanos Orbón square was built, whose rectangular perimeter populated by white galleries still causes admiration among locals and foreigners today.

Singular beauty and architectural characterise this market square, where it is possible to contemplate and acquire fresh products from the Comarca and the region, such as legumes, vegetables, herbs, fruits, cheeses, meat, fish, etc.
