ACAR Teatro del Mundo performs “El umbral” at the theater space attached to the iglesia de Piarnu, in Castrillón. It is a piece for an adult audience about loss and oblivion.
On stage are three wandering souls, forgotten beings, dead or nearly so, who roam a place outside of time waiting for a final journey. While they wait, they repeat the same rituals, arrange the same things over and over again, and speak without listening to each other, in soliloquies about their obsessions.
The company portrays an atmosphere of the end of an era that goes beyond the characters: everything that has been abandoned or lost, such as languages, objects, trades, values, and customs, which today ends up in museums. From there, the play casts an ironic glance at the way that past is contemplated before turning its gaze to the future.
