Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Sobrescobio

The Plaza del Ayuntamiento de Sobrescobio is the open space in front of the town hall of Rioseco, the capital of the municipality of Sobrescobio in the Valle del Nalón. The village belongs to the parish of Oviñana, at the far northern end of a municipality much of whose territory lies within the Parque Natural de Redes. Rioseco has been the capital since 1929, when the council left the small settlement of La Polina and moved to its present location.

In 2009 the community of Sobrescobio received the Premio al Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias, and to mark it a commemorative sculpture by the sculptor Juan Salustiano Sánchez was placed in the village’s church square. Rioseco also preserves the chapel of San Ginés and holds its festivities in honour of this saint at the end of August.
