About this venue

Plaza Periodista Arturo Arias is a public square in Cimavilla, the oldest part of Gijón, which today is a residential, commercial and leisure area.

It is home to a bronze monument to Arturo Arias, a journalist and playwright born in Gijón, created by the sculptor Francisco González Macías and inaugurated on 19 July 1979.

The square is also fronted by the old Tabacalera building, which began as the convent of the Agustinas Recoletas in 1668, became a tobacco factory in 1843 and operated as such until 2002; it is now set to become a cultural centre.
