Holy Week in Villaviciosa
Holy Week in Villaviciosa
History
Holy Week in Villaviciosa dates back to the 17th century. In the year 1668 two Dominican friars from Oviedo established in Villaviciosa the Brotherhood of the Holy Name of Jesus, which, like that of the Capital, had the purpose of organizing the acts and manifestations commemorating the Passion.
Events
From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the events succeed one another, consisting of seven processions. Mainly on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday, thousands of people converge on Villaviciosa to witness the Encounter (Wednesday) and the Descent or Unnailing (Good Friday) which are two true sacramental autos, of a dramatic force worthy of consideration.
