Synopsis
There was only one track, the train track from Avilés on the way to ENSIDESA. The train came loaded with coal and stopped in Villabona for the track change. The women went with a bucket and spent the day there. Charo was a girl, she went with a bag and picked up what was left lying by the tracks. They went at night, they were on the lookout for the guards, the abisinios. There were several who climbed up to the wagon with a sack, others waited below for the others to throw it down, they passed the sacks to each other and filled up what they could.
Later, they sold that coal to be able to buy for their day-to-day needs, to heat the house, to cook, as a bargaining chip in the black market when food was scarce. Gossip says that some of those abisinios let them pass in exchange for certain types of payments, and while one distracted them, the others could collect coal. The story of the women, the story of the carboneras, the story of the body as spoils of the infinite war against life.
