The Café Gijón Award is an accolade whose emotional connection with our city has not stopped growing since 1989, the year in which the Gijón City Council decided to sponsor and organize this award, giving new momentum to this cultural initiative with such a long history. A jury made up of prestigious personalities from the world of literature guarantees its literary quality with absolute independence from commercial interests.
History
The Premio Café Gijón for short novels was established in 1949 by the actor Fernando Fernán-Gómez and some friends from the tertulia that met at the famous café on the Paseo de Recoletos. After various vicissitudes, in 1989 the Gijón/Xixón City Council made the decision to give new momentum to this award, now in the long novel category, and with a considerable increase in its prize money.
Among its list of winners, we find figures of the stature of César González-Ruano, Ana María Matute, Carmen Martín Gaite, or Luis Mateo Díez.
