Magdalena Mariyam is a pioneering work that adapts the figure of Mary Magdalene to the stage language of Kathakali, the traditional dance-theater of Kerala. Created in the 1960s by T. M. B. Nedungadi and choreographed by the master Guru Punnathoor Madhava Panicker, this piece stands out for integrating Christian biblical themes within the aesthetic and expressive codes of this Indian discipline, traditionally focused on the Mahabharata and the Ramayana.
