Maria Stuarda, a tragic opera in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848), with a libretto by Giuseppe Bardari based on the Italian translation of Maria Stuart by Friedrich von Schiller. Premiered at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1835. A co-production by the Ópera de Oviedo and ABAO Bilbao Opera.
The confrontation between two queens — Maria Stuarda of Scotland and Elisabetta of England — in one of the pinnacles of romantic bel canto.
