About this venue
The Teatro Campoamor is a theatre in Oviedo run by the city council. It grew out of a public ideas competition held in 1882, won by the Madrid architects José López Salaberry and Siro Borrajo Montenegro, and opened to the public on 17 September 1892. It bears the surname of the Asturian poet Ramón de Campoamor, at the suggestion of the writer and then councillor Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”.
It was conceived as an Italian-style theatre with a horseshoe-shaped auditorium and has 1,491 seats spread over five levels. During the 1934 revolution a fire left its interior almost completely destroyed. Today it hosts the city’s opera season and the Princesa de Asturias Awards ceremony.
