Magdalena Mariyam represents one of the first attempts to incorporate a biblical Christian theme into the stage language of Kathakali. Created in the 1960s by T. M. B. Nedungadi and choreographed by the master Guru Punnathoor Madhava Panicker, this work adapts the figure of Mary Magdalene to the aesthetic and expressive codes of the dance-theater of Kerala.
The piece stands out for its pioneering nature by demonstrating the ability of Kathakali to transcend its traditional repertoire based on the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, exploring new religious and cultural narratives. The original 1964 performance featured the interpretation of Tara Rajkumar before the President of India.
