Hysteria was known as a great black beast that terrified all the doctors. The word comes from the term Hystera: uterus.

The Salpêtrière is today a hospital in Paris but, at the end of the 19th century, it was a place inhabited by 4,000 women (beggars, daughters of adultery, orphans, blind, prostitutes, bohemians, lesbians, and a long etcetera) who lived between the reality of their daily lives in that place and the theatrical representation, exaggerated, exhibitionist, and photographed, of their supposed illness: hysteria.

Every Tuesday, scholars and doctors (all men, of course) were invited to witness the supposed attacks of hysteria of those women. And they, hypnotized, exhausted (we can imagine) and claudicating before the inevitable, did nothing but fulfill what was expected.

This show is, in some way, a tribute to all of them, but also an attempt to understand them and, even more, to love them. It is also a space for play, where the simulation of being what one is not and of re-presenting what is expected, has allowed us to open the door to other women, who came after, and who accompany us.

I wish someone, at some point, had looked at them with some love. I wish.

(Borja Roces, dramaturgy)
