El Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea dedicates an exhibition to Jannis Kounellis (Piraeus, 1936 – Rome, 2017), a key figure of arte povera. Laberinto sin paredes stems from the artist’s childhood in the port of Piraeus and his relationship with the sea as a space for cultural exchange. The curator is David Barro.
Kounellis defined himself as an ancient man and a modern painter. The CGAC describes his work as a sort of excavation into memory: a critical reread of the past using a radically contemporary language. The exhibition brings together elements that allude to travel, migration, and maritime transport, alongside the artist’s longing for the poetic dimension of travel lost in the industrial era.
Algunas piezas:
- An installation of nine Venetian sails arranged in a fan shape, which refer to his bond with the Mediterranean and the transformation of maritime trade.
- Used sails, tensioned and folded over steel frames, which retain the imprint of his life at sea.
- The Albatros series: broken sections of a wooden ship suspended in front of tilted steel plates.
The exhibition is co-produced with Es Baluard Museu, with the collaboration of KEWENIG (Palma/Berlín) and the Archivio Kounellis. It occupies the ground floor, the Double Space, and the hall of the CGAC and can be seen from September 25, 2026 to April 18, 2027. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 20:00 h, is closed on Mondays, on December 24, 25, and 31, and on January 1 and 6, and admission to the exhibitions is free.
