The exhibition ‘La Vía Láctea tiene nombre ucraniano’ arrives at the Paseo de Begoña in Gijón to offer a raw and necessary visual testimony about the conflict in Ukraine. Through about twenty images captured on the ground by photographers Álex Zapico and Ricardo García Vilanova, the exhibition seeks to raise awareness among the public about the devastating impact of the war on the civilian population.
The photographs, installed in five large-format cubes, capture heartbreaking moments from the first days of the conflict, including scenes of flight and funerals that changed the international narrative of the war. Photographer Álex Zapico highlights the importance of this exercise in memory, recalling that many of the people portrayed in his images have died due to the attacks, underscoring the urgency of not forgetting what is happening in Ukraine.
The exhibition is an initiative organized by the Department of Social Services, Housing and Cooperation of Gijón and will remain open to the public until May 3.
