About this venue

Paseo de Begoña is a pedestrian street in the El Centro district of Gijón, with gardens, a children’s play area and a music bandstand. It is about 315 metres long; along its western side runs the promenade itself, lined with rows of trees and benches. The Teatro Jovellanos and the Café Dindurra stand on it, and it hosts the traditional open-air dances (verbenas) of the Begoña festivities.

Until the second half of the 19th century the site was a wooded rise with the Begoña chapel, from which it takes its name. In 1857 it was first laid out as a promenade with a double row of trees, and from the Restoration period onward it became the town’s central park, surrounded by some of the leading leisure venues of the turn of the century, including the first cinemas.
