MAGDALENAMARIYAM (Mary Magdalene) is a pioneering work created in the 1960s that adapted, for the first time, a Christian biblical theme to the stage language of Kathakali, which is traditionally focused on stories from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, and the Puranas. Its main significance lies in having demonstrated the capacity of Kathakali to incorporate new religious and cultural narratives without losing its artistic identity.
