Description of the Exhibition

The temporary exhibition “Popular Mexican Types” presents a photographic series made by the Mexican photographers Antíoco Cruces and Luis G. Campa between 1868 and 1877. This photographic series, commercialized with the name “Photographic Portraits of Mexican Types”, represents characters in the performance of their daily tasks and marked a milestone in the consolidation of the collective ideology of “Mexicanity”.

History of the Collection

The collection preserved by the Museum of the Asturian People arrived thanks to an Asturian emigrant in Mexico, who brought it back on his return. This collection constitutes one of the most complete of the series, along with the one preserved at the photography archive of the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH).
