Quintes is a coastal parish of the municipality of Villaviciosa, one of the westernmost in the municipality, on the left bank of the río España, 17 km from Villaviciosa and about 14 km from Gijón. Its cliffs drop down to the Cantabrian Sea, and Playa España, at the mouth of the river, draws many visitors. It covers about five square kilometres and has around seven hundred inhabitants, a figure that can double in summer.
Traditionally its people lived from farming and livestock, and sandstone quarries have a long presence in the area. Highlights of the festive calendar are the Santa Ana festivities on 26, 27 and 28 July; the feast of the patron saints San Fabián and San Sebastián on 20 January; and, in spring, the Festival Gastronómico de la Llámpara, organised by the Sociedad Cultural Recreativa Clarín.
