The Ateneo Obrero de Villaviciosa is a private, non-profit association with more than a century of existence. It was founded in 1911, and in August 1922 it inaugurated its own social building, built on land given by the marqués de Villaviciosa, with plans donated by the architect Manuel del Busto.

Today it brings together sections such as the theatre group Teatro Contraste, a chess club and the Club de Bolos Ateneo Obrero. Its activity includes series such as the Diálogos de Ateneo, courses, an Asturian-language classroom and the Patio de Ateneo, with open-air music and theatre.
