About this venue

Plaza de la Constitución, also known as the plaza Mayor, is in Oviedo, between Calle del Peso, Calle del Sol and Cimadevilla. The city hall and the church of San Isidoro stand on it. Over time it has had several names: first Plaza de la Ciudad and Mayor, and in the 19th century Real and de la Constitución.

The centre of the city’s old market was here and, as Fermín Canella described in 1887, the Asturian danza prima had been danced here until shortly before. The city hall, classicist in style, has central and left sides designed by Juan de Naveda (1622-1623). The building was almost completely rebuilt between 1939 and 1940, the year from which its central tower and clock date. Seven arches run along its ground floor.
