The Cathedral of San Salvador in Oviedo, also called Sancta Ovetensis, is a Gothic church raised on the site where Fruela I had a basilica dedicated to the Saviour built and where Alfonso II the Chaste later erected a cathedral complex. Work on the Gothic church got under way in 1382, while Gutierre de Toledo was bishop, and its tower, 80 metres high and divided into five sections, was started in 1508 with Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón in charge.
The Cámara Santa, which dates from the 9th century, holds UNESCO World Heritage status, and the cathedral has been a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1931. The Gothic cloister was built in phases between 1300 and 1441. The complex is also listed among the assets of the Camino Primitivo to Santiago and, according to the cathedral itself, the Camino de Santiago began here in the time of Alfonso II.
