The patio of the Historic Building of the University of Oviedo is the large arcaded cloister at the heart of the university’s historic seat on calle San Francisco. The building was raised on the site once occupied by the colegio de San Gregorio, thanks to the bequest in the will of Archbishop Fernando Valdés Salas (1572), and its design is credited to Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and Juan del Ribero Rada.
The cloister holds the metal statue of the founder, a work by Cipriano Folgueras Doiztúa dated 21 September 1908. The building suffered a fire in the 1934 Revolution and was later rebuilt and restored.
