The Palacio de Velarde is a Baroque building in Oviedo, built in the 1760s for Pedro Velarde, a councillor of the city. It was designed by Manuel Reguera González, born in Candás and regarded as one of the leading figures of Asturian architecture. For much of the 20th century it housed the Santo Ángel girls’ school.
Today it is one of the three buildings of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, which opened its doors here in 1980. Its main facade faces Calle Santa Ana, and inside the highlights are the square courtyard, with arches resting on Tuscan columns, and an imperial-style staircase leading to the first-floor gallery.
