The Junta General del Principado de Asturias is the regional parliament of Asturias, the body that represents the people of Asturias and carries out the legislative function. Its seat is the Palacio de la Junta General, on calle Fruela in Oviedo, a building inaugurated in 1910 as the headquarters of the former Provincial Council (Diputación Provincial).
The palace, designed by the architect Nicolás García Rivero, was built where the Gothic convent of San Francisco once stood. Its design is French-inspired, with richly ornamented façades and slate mansard roofs, and inside there is a central courtyard with a staircase decorated with rampant lions. From time to time the institution holds open days so the public can get to know the regional parliament.
