Campo de San Francisco

The Campo de San Francisco is the urban park in the centre of Oviedo and one of the largest in Asturias. Its origin is tied to a Franciscan monastery built in the 13th century; for centuries it was a set of orchards shared between the cathedral chapter, other convents and a few private owners. In 1534, the city and the chapter agreed to open the grounds to the public, and over time it gained promenades, roundabouts and tree-lined paths.

According to the City Council, of its 90,000 m² around 55,000 are green areas, with 955 trees of 51 species; the oldest are oaks around 300 years old. Among its fountains and ponds, such as the Estanque de los Patos and the Estanque de Covadonga, the park frequently hosts cultural events and open-air activities.
