The Casa de Cultura Teodoro Cuesta occupies the former Escuela de Capataces building in Mieres, dated to 1884 and built to a design by Jerónimo Ibrán, who probably worked with Rafael González Ferrer. It was conceived with two floors plus an attic, surrounded by gardens and with a rear courtyard that held a pavilion for laboratories and workshops; today it has a U-shaped plan.
Between 1926 and 1929 the municipal architect José Avelino Díaz extended it with a new pavilion and regionalist decoration. In 1987 its conversion into a Casa de Cultura was designed, and it opened on 31 May 1988 with an exhibition room, an assembly hall and a library; a covered auditorium with tiered seating was built in the old courtyard. It is named after the Mieres poet Teodoro Cuesta and keeps a sociocultural use.
