The Casa de las Artes y las Ciencias in Luarca is a municipal space for artistic and scientific outreach that brings together displays on the historical, artistic and human heritage of the municipality of Valdés. Its highlights include exhibitions devoted to three Valdés natives of international standing: the biochemist Severo Ochoa, winner of the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine; the scientist Margarita Salas, his disciple; and the film art director Gil Parrondo, winner of two Academy Awards.
The centre stands in the heart of Luarca’s old town, beside the Palacio del Marqués de Ferrera, on Olavarrieta street, a stepped street popularly known as Los Escalerones. The same premises also house the Municipal Tourism Office of Luarca-Valdés.
