About this venue

Ciaño, officially Ciañu, is a parish in the municipality of Langreo and one of the districts that make up the city. Its urban core is crossed by the Nalón river and its tributary, the Samuño.

In the 16th century it was the most important economic centre of Langreo, and with the rise of coal extraction in the 19th century it became one of the towns that prospered most in the municipality. In 1960 the parish had more than 10,000 inhabitants; the industrial restructuring crisis that followed cost it population and services. Its heritage includes the Torre de La Quintana, the Palacio de San Féliz, the church of San Esteban, with 12th-century Romanesque portals, and the Ecomuseo Minero del Valle de Samuño, whose tourist train goes into the San Luis pit.
