About this venue

Plaza del Ayuntamiento is the open space in front of Grado’s town hall, in the historic centre of the town. The current building, rectangular with three storeys and a tower at one end, began to be built around 1848 following plans by Andrés Coello. Earlier, in the 18th century, another two-storey town hall had been built in the Campo de San Antonio and was destroyed by French troops in 1809.

The town hall was remodelled several times during the 19th and 20th centuries; the tower, where the clock now sits, took on its present look after works carried out between 1931 and 1936, and the municipal coat of arms stands above the main balcony. According to the Asturian tourism portal, one of the gates of the old town wall would have stood in this square, leading to today’s Plaza del General Ponte, the heart of the well-known Wednesday and Sunday market.
