The Plaza Mayor of Gijón is in the Cimadevilla neighbourhood, between the plazuela del Marqués and San Lorenzo beach. The project dates from 1858, when the architect Andrés Coello designed it on the model of Castilian main squares; the town hall, a building in classicist style, stands on its east side.
It was conceived with arcades on all four sides but was never completed: only two are porticoed, with round arches on two-storey buildings, and the north side was left without arcades. Today it is a fully pedestrian space, a thoroughfare between the marina, Cimadevilla, the city centre and the beach, and it hosts concerts and popular celebrations such as the opening proclamation of Semana Grande or the Begoña festivities.
