About this venue
Plaza del Marqués is a public square in Gijón next to the Palacio de Revillagigedo, facing the Puerto Deportivo (marina). It is home to the Monumento al Rey Don Pelayo, a bronze sculpture by José María López Rodríguez (Ribadeo, 1844 – Gijón, 1913), unveiled on 5 August 1891.
The monument’s pedestal, also designed by López Rodríguez, carries inscriptions on its four sides, one of them by Gaspar de Jovellanos, and is completed by a fountain decorated with lion mouths and shells.
