Plaza del Instituto is a public square in the El Centro district of Gijón, a few metres from San Lorenzo beach, and is popularly known as “El Parchís” because of the layout its gardens had after a 1946 refurbishment. Its origins go back to 1782, when Jovellanos conceived it as part of his plan of urban improvements for the city.
It was refurbished between March 2009 and February 2011. Beneath the square lies an underground car park with 238 spaces, and the works uncovered archaeological remains of 17th-century houses, 16th-century coins and a mosaic. It is surrounded by many emblematic buildings.
