About this venue

Plaza de San Miguel, known among locals as La Plazuela, is in the El Centro district, a short walk from the Paseo de Begoña and from San Lorenzo beach. It is elliptical in shape, with eight streets fanning out from it. It was born with the expansion of the Arenal de San Lorenzo: the demolition of the city wall began in 1867, and in 1869 it first appears under the name Plaza de la calle La Matriz.

Its current name, honouring the liberal politician and soldier Evaristo Fernández de San Miguel, was fixed on 9 June 1939; the monument dedicated to him was unveiled in 1922. The buildings around it include Modernist examples, such as the Café San Miguel (1901), and at the north crossing stands a small rationalist kiosk from 1946.
