About this venue

The Museo del Ferrocarril de Asturias, run by Gijón City Council, sits on part of what was once the city’s Estación del Norte. RENFE closed that station in 1990; in the first phase of the museum project the historic building was restored and a new one was put up opposite it, the two sheltered under a single canopy. The museum opened its doors on 22 October 1998.

According to Wikipedia, its roughly 17,000 m² of facilities hold one of the largest and best-preserved collections of locomotives and wagons in Europe. Since 2016 the museum has also been one of the anchor points of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
