About this venue

The Iglesia de San Pedro is the parish church next to Campo Valdés, close to San Lorenzo beach and the Cimadevilla neighbourhood in Gijón. Its origins go back to the 15th century, and for centuries it was the town’s only parish; Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos was baptized there.

The original building was destroyed in 1936, at the start of the Civil War. The current church was built between 1945 and 1955 to a design by the brothers Francisco and Federico Somolinos, in a historicist style inspired by Asturian pre-Romanesque and Romanesque architecture. It has an ambulatory that in 2012 was turned into a chapel decorated with mosaics by the artist Marko Ivan Rupnik.
