The Iglesia de San José is the church of the parish of San José, in the centre of Gijón and linked to the Carmen neighbourhood. The current building, designed by the architect Enrique Rodríguez Bustelo, began construction in 1946 and was inaugurated on 7 November 1954, after the destruction of the earlier church, whose first stone had been laid in 1890.
It is built in a neo-baroque style, though with materials that were modern for its time: reinforced concrete and a central vault of lead-covered ceramic. The parish, which describes itself as open and committed to the neighbourhood, includes Cáritas, the Vera Cruz brotherhood and the Carmen brotherhood among its groups.
