The church of the Universidad Laboral is part of the large architectural complex in Gijón designed by a team of architects led by Luis Moya Blanco. It ranks among the largest elliptical-plan churches in the world, and its dome has an estimated weight of about 2,300 tons.
After the complex was rehabilitated it was deconsecrated: the pews and religious symbols were removed, apart from a simple cross, and today it is used as an exhibition space. Since 2016, the Universidad Laboral complex has been declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of monument.
