About this venue

The Fundación Museo Evaristo Valle is in Somió, in Gijón, and owes its origin to the will of María Rodríguez del Valle, the painter’s niece, who gathered the artist’s works, documents and personal belongings over several decades. The museum opened on 5 March 1983 and defines itself as a space for encounter, learning and enjoyment.

The grounds bring together a building erected as a museum in 1971 and a late 19th-century mansion remodelled in 1942, set in gardens of more than 16,000 square metres declared a Historic Garden in 2016. Besides the painter’s work, it holds the shell collection he inherited from his father, begun around 1850, open-air contemporary sculptures and an area devoted to bonsai. Its programme includes temporary exhibitions, educational circuits for school groups, musical activities and the Laboratorio de las Artes y la Naturaleza.
