The Complejo Deportivo Las Mestas is a municipal sports facility in Gijón, owned by the City Council. It opened in 1942 and was initially devoted solely to equestrian sport; the Council bought the site in 1953 and has since added new stands, such as the east stand in 1965 and the two west stands in 1966.
Today it remains the home of Gijón’s international show-jumping competition, and it also brings together a 428-metre velodrome, a certified 400-metre, eight-lane athletics track named after “José Luis Rubio”, and a stadium where rugby and American football are played. The main enclosure holds around 10,000 spectators, and the athletics annex another 5,500.
