About this venue

Plaza de Jovellanos is in Cimavilla (Cimadevilla), the oldest neighborhood in Gijón, of Roman origin, set on the Cerro de Santa Catalina, a peninsula jutting out into the Cantabrian Sea. It lies opposite the Casa Natal de Jovellanos, now the Museo Casa Natal de Jovellanos, and Roman remains have been documented in this area, including an old water reservoir located in the square itself.

The neighborhood was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural, in the category of Historic Site (Conjunto Histórico), in 1975. It brings together Roman remains, chapels, palaces and Baroque buildings alongside contemporary constructions, and Eduardo Chillida’s sculpture «Elogio del Horizonte» stands at the top of the hill.
