The Cerro de Santa Catalina, also known as La Atalaya, is the highest point of the peninsula of the same name in Gijón, home to the Cimadevilla neighbourhood, the oldest part of the city. It owes its name to the former chapel of Santa Catalina, seat of the mariners’ guild.
In the 17th century a military battery was built here to defend the Gijón coast against pirates and privateers, and the hill remained military land until the city council recovered it in 1982. Today it is a park overlooking the Cantabrian Sea, home to Elogio del horizonte, the concrete sculpture by Eduardo Chillida inaugurated on 9 June 1990, for which the city offered this site in 1986.
