About this venue

The Casa Consistorial, on the eastern side of the Plaza Mayor, within the Cimadevilla neighbourhood, has been the main seat of the Gijón City Council since 1865 and is the place where the municipal plenary session meets.

The project was commissioned in 1858 to the architect Andrés Coello, who conceived a building in a classicist style. Works began in July 1861 and by mid-1865 the building was practically finished. On 24 August 2002 it was reopened at a ceremony presided over by Felipe VI.

Before settling here, the municipal government had other seats, among them the Torre del Reloj, dated 1572, and a building on the plaza de la Corrada.
