Viavélez, officially El Porto in Asturian, is a seafaring village in the municipality of El Franco, in western Asturias. It keeps the feel of a small fishing port, with narrow lanes between the houses that open onto good views of the harbour. For centuries it played a prominent role in whaling, and its shipyard, famed for building very fast brigantines, ceased activity in the 19th century.
It is also the hometown of the novelist Corín Tellado, who gives her name to one of its streets, where her birthplace can be seen. The Viavélez viewpoint, with wide views of the coastline, is home to the sculpture “Litoral” by Ernesto Knorr.
