Lastres (Llastres in Asturian) is a seafaring village and parish in the municipality of Colunga, on Asturias’ eastern coast, straddling sea and mountains. It once lived from whaling and served as a stronghold against possible attacks arriving by sea.
Its old town keeps cobbled streets, palaces and houses bearing coats of arms. Places of interest include the Balleneros quarter, the Buen Suceso chapel, the Torre del Reloj and the church of Santa María de Sábada, as well as the San Roque viewpoint, which takes in the village, its beaches, the Sueve range and the Picos de Europa. In 2010 the Fundación Princesa de Asturias granted it the Pueblo Ejemplar de Asturias award, and it was the setting for the TV series “Doctor Mateo”.
